Vaqueros open 2013 with split at Bakersfield Quad

SBCC lost a tough five-set match in its women’s volleyball opener on Saturday at the Bakersfield Quad, then came back to sweep San Diego Mesa. The Vaqueros fell to Grossmont 25-18, 23-25, 25-16, 21-25, 23-21 in the morning and beat Mesa 25-16, 25-17, 25-22.

Jenna Anderson, last year’s WSC Player of the Year for the conference champion Vaqueros, had 19 kills and three aces against Grossmont. Madison Waddell added 12 kills for SBCC, which had a 14-11 lead in the fifth set.

In the second match, freshman defensive specialist Jane Petricka delivered seven aces, along with good defense and passing. Anderson added 11 kills and Kristy Kearney had seven kills and two blocks. Eryn Young contributed 17 digs.

“Both our setters (Ari Gardner and Madi Leiphardt, a freshman from Dos Pueblos High) played well,” said coach Ed Gover. “I was happy with our freshmen, our setters … everyone played well. We’re 3-deep at every position this year, which is a nice luxury.”

The Vaqueros will host Irvine Valley in their home opener on Friday at 5 p.m.
