SBCC sweeps in battle of Vaqueros

Sophomore Madison Waddell had 14 kills on Wednesday and Eryn Young had an outstanding match with five aces and 15 digs, leading No. 7 SBCC to a 3-0 women’s volleyball win at Glendale.

Santa Barbara (4-4) won 25-18, 25-18, 25-21 in an all-Vaquero battle. Glendale (3-6) also uses the Vaquero nickname.

Trailing 18-13 in the third set, Young served eight straight points, including three aces, to give the visitors a 21-18 advantage.

“We were very steady the whole match,” said coach Ed Gover. “Our setters (Ari Garner and Madelon Leiphardt) did a great job of distributing the ball to all the hitters.”

Jenna Anderson added 11 kills while Megan Lunger and Kristy Kearney had seven apiece.

SBCC will compete in the two-day L.A. Pierce Tournament on Friday, opening against Santa Monica at 6:30 p.m.

Vaqueros drop two in SBCC Quad

Playing on its home floor didn’t help SBCC on Saturday as the Vaqueros dropped two women’s volleyball matches to a pair of unbeaten Orange Empire League teams in the SBCC Quad Tournament.

The Vaqueros, ranked No. 4 in the state, lost to No. 21 Fullerton 3-1 (25-12, 20-25, 25-16, 25-19) and No. 9 Golden West 3-0 (27-25, 25-22, 25-12).

Jenna Anderson topped SBCC (3-4) with 12 kills in each match. Kristy Kearney had 10 kills in the morning match and Madison Waddell added nine. Eryn Young recorded 20 digs.

“We played well in the first two sets but too many unforced errors cost us in the last two sets,” noted coach Ed Gover.

Fullerton is 7-0 on the year while Golden West, last year’s state runner-up, is 3-0.

Jasmine Ward had 11 kills against Golden West and Kearney added three blocks and two kills.

SBCC travels to Glendale on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. match.

Vaqueros drop 3-2 heartbreaker to Irvine Valley

By Dave Loveton, SBCC Sports Information

SBCC stormed back from a 2-0 deficit on Friday night but couldn’t finish the deal in a 3-2 women’s volleyball loss to Irvine Valley. The Lasers (2-0) spoiled the Vaqueros’ home opener with a 25-21, 25-18, 22-25, 23-25, 17-15 victory that lasted two hours and 20 minutes.

It was just the fifth loss in the last 42 home matches for Santa Barbara (1-2).

Jenna Anderson led the Vaqueros with 20 kills, 13 digs and a .311 hitting percentage. Madison Waddell added 17 kills and Jasmine Ward contributed seven. Kristy Kearney had seven blocks, including two solo.

Eryn Young had a match-high 23 digs.

The Vaqueros jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the third set, capped by an ace serve from Jane Petricka. Irvine pulled within one at 21-20 before Kearney, Anderson and Waddell notched kills to rebuild the lead.

SBCC won a tight 25-23 decision in Game 4 and evened the match when Ward drilled a kill through the block.

“We just decided to go all out when we were down two sets,” said Anderson, a 5-11 sophomore. “We started communicating better, taking more swings and our serving and passing were much better.”

The Vaqueros jumped ahead 10-5 in the fifth set on an ace by setter Ari Garner. The Lasers responded with a 6-0 run, sparked by Shaelyn Perez, and took their first lead of the final set at 11-10.

SBCC was never able to regain the lead, although the Vaqueros did fight off three match points and tied it at 14 after trailing 14-12. Annie Mitchem, a 6-2 freshman middle blocker from Texas who led the Irvine Valley offense, finished off the match with a block on the right side.

“You have two of the best teams in the state with talented hitters on both sides,” said Vaquero coach Ed Gover, who’s starting his 23rd season. "Irvine is packed with Division 1 players and that 6-2 girl was tough to stop. This was a good volleyball match that came down to a few swings at the end.

“We have a really tough schedule and we’re playing a lot of top-10 teams in the state early in the season.”

The Vaqueros travel to the El Camino Quad on Friday to face two more top-rated squads in El Camino and Pasadena.
